One More Tribute to Elvis!

        Kissing Kismet!

Elvis was my first big crush
every cent I could get went
           to buy his LPs and
           to go to his movies
           My two favorites were
          “G.I Blues” and  “Blue Hawaii”

When he came to Seattle to
make “It Happened at the World’s Fair”
I clamored to be one of
          his screaming fans, but
          we were farm folk,
there were chores to be done

          Sometimes dreams come true
          when least expected-that’s what
          happened to me
the night he walked across the
floor-a dead ringer for Elvis Presley!

It was at the Evergreen Ballroom just
         outside of Lacey, Washington
My best friend Suzie was with me,
we were seventeen and to this day
         she cannot remember a thing

         As EP walked toward me
I thought, It’s not him, this
          Guy is only 5’ 10”
         Clearly the magazines had
reported him at 6 feet tall
         He smiled that southern smile
         smooth and crooked, asking softly
“Miss, would you like to dance with me?”

It’s somewhat of a blur after
all these years, but I remember
him coming to the house a few times,
          taking me into Olympia, and
          tooling around, stopping for
          burgers & cokes at a drive-in,
          but,  never leaving the car…
          and lots of romantic kissing

Then the call, I’ve been ordered to report
for duty, probably you won’t see me again,
           keep smiling; you’re a beautiful lady…

You see, it was 1967 and Vietnam was on
and I never did see him again
Fort Lewis was in our back yard and
           Edward Parker had mentioned that
           he worked in Army Intelligence

Over the years, I read all the biographies on
Elvis and  realized that he was out and about
among the citizenry during that time,
           right before he married Priscilla
and he really was 5 ft.10
I believe to this day, Elvis kissed me
           over and over again!
