Necessity: Yo Mama of Invention

In memory of Lawrence V. Meyer
Dec. 30, 1904-Jan.10, 1981.

I feel extremely fortunate that I was too broke to buy
my father a special present for his 75th birthday,  so
I dug deep and penned a song to honor him.
Gratitude for timing hugged me like a warm cloak
at his funeral a year or so later.
As we sang his song graveside per my mother's
request, my heart burst with joy that I had serenaded
him with it in my parents' kitchen the year before.
Though I was devastated by his sudden death, I was
so glad Pop heard the song in celebration of his life
while he was still with us. Here it is:

It’s Great To Be 75!

[G] Look in your picture [C] album
Take a [G]walk down memory [D]street
[G]Kiss your wife, [C] smile inside
[G] Pop, ain’t[D] life been [G] sweet?

Chorus:

[G] It’s great. It’s [D] great
It’s [C]great to be seventy-[G]five
It’s [C]great to play your [G] Roy Clark tape
It’s [D]great to be [G] alive

[G]Smile at your [C]neighbor,
[G] Smile all [D]around
[G]Laugh and talk and [C]joke a bit
Ain’t it [G] great to [D]hear the [G] sound?

Repeat Chorus after every verse

[G] Look out at Mt. [C] Rainier
[G] Ain’t the view [D] divine?
[G] It’s so grand to [C] see the sights
[G] Ain’t the [D] Lord been [G] kind?

[G] Smell that bread
[C]Bakin’ in the oven
[G]Smell that coconut [D] pie
[G] You tell me and [C] I agree
It’s [G] great to [D] be [G] alive!
