That Sexy Old Fart

                                                Before it happened, nobody
                                                could have convinced me that
I’d fall ass over tea kettles for
                                                A 67 year old man!

I was 43 at the time
He had 24 years on me
                                                Yet, when we met
                                                sparks ignited my soul

                                                “Age makes no difference”
was not one of my sayings
I had always gone for younger,
                                                hotter studs

                                                But somehow, this rapscallion in
                                                his safari hat with
                                                his deep throated laugh and
                                                proper British accent
                                                slayed me…

And I wasn’t the only one,
                                                Ladies paid attention when
                                                he was around, they
                                                flirted, shamelessly –
                                                all ages

                                                Years ago he moved on
to a woman six years my junior
he assures me to this day
that they still have a good thing

                                                I am envious-what I wouldn’t give
                                                for one more dance with
                                                that old fart again…

Update: He is 90 now and still a sexy old fart!

The Conversation We’re Not Going to Have

This poem written at the request of another friend,
who over a glass of wine and intimate conversation
said I should pen it.

Because the sub-context of your last Christmas card
Was: I cannot be your friend anymore
I am going to Heaven and
You are going to Hell
How ironic, I thought, celebrating Christ and all
I felt a bit like Mary Magdalene except
Jesus wasn’t here to defend me
So, my conclusion is:
You’re a hypocrite and not fit to
shine my heretic boots
So, I agree, you get the last (judgmental) word
Thanks for the memories
I won’t burden your soul
with a reply
Actually, I prefer not to play this game
ever again
Rots of Ruck,
Your former best friend for
nearly fifty years…

Chorizo

Image result for free images of chorizo scrambled eggs

First I get out my little iron skillets
I put the chorizo in the 8 inch one
and turn the burner to medium

Then I see his face, serious
as he shows me how to milk
the chorizo out of its skin

 The vivid orange meat oozes
  into the pan
  Oops! I’ve forgotten the onions!
So I quickly peel and chop and
put them in the 6 inch pan

And the green pepper, same thing
He had sautéed the onions and
   green pepper together, first
   I am a seasoned cook, I can
    improvise to catch up

Then he used a slotted spoon
and many layers of paper towels
to daub the runny orange grease
   off the sausage

He did all of this with great ceremony
like a magician, sharing his tricks-
   I was so impressed

I would not learn until months later
   from his parole officer that
    he specialized in impressing-
    He was a typical ex-con
    he was from southern California
    a real actor, that one

He built a covered deck off my
   trailer and a covered porch
   over the back door
   I was so impressed-
   Later, he would tell that
   he had never built anything
   that he had researched carpentry
   at the local library
   Inside, he built a pantry
in the hallway and a laundry by
   my stacked washer/dryer
He knew how to match the
  veneers seamlessly, so
   it looked like the original
  I was so impressed…

When my eleven year old daughter
   turned in rebellion, he knew
precisely the words to calm her
after all, his staying depended on
   everybody getting along

   He charmed my mother, too
   and soon was rehabilitating
   a basement room
   on her house
Later, I would find out that
“His price was a bit high”

When I needed a vehicle that
I could sleep in to do research
  in Montana, he volunteered to
  trade his canopied truck for
    my car-for a week

 He was so ingeniously accommodating
  he penetrated our lives
  soon, we were engaged-How much
   Good fortune could come from
  answering an ad? I wondered

   It was the early eighties
I was in my early thirties
   Looking back, I see how
   Truly gullible I was

Then he began to disappear for
   longer and longer periods
   of time
Later I would find out that
he had made a connection in
  Tacoma and he
  was strung out…

One day we were Christmas shopping
and suddenly he got violently ill
I rushed him to the Emergency
dropped him off and drove to park
Before I could follow him in, he
stormed out, crying: No insurance!
 They will not take me!
Later I would find out that ERs
  do not help junkies…

In January he had been gone
two weeks, when I decided to
 go talk with his P.O.
who asked: What don’t you know?
I teared and the parole officer
was forthcoming: He is not just
a poor soul who was imprisoned for
dealing marijuana like he probably told you
  (That was exactly his story)
He is a bonefide heroin addict who
was busted as a mule and
my bet is he’s mainlining again

His words hit hard and true,
just as he meant them to
 I went home broken hearted,
 Then I noticed things missing:
 35mm camera, microwave, VCR,
leather valise, my box of gold coins
  and I was irate!

   My older brother’s classmate owned
   a local pawn shop
    I went on a hunch
He fingered his files and pulled out
half a dozen tickets, saying, I doubt
he’ll be back to redeem these…
I read the tickets: He stole that
   stuff from me!
What would you like to buy back?
   He smiled, consolingly

Next I went to the library and
checked out an armload of books
 on heroin addiction, determined to
  prepare myself with the knowledge
  I would need

I am eating my chorizo and scrambled eggs
enjoying a toasted English muffin with
   honey slathered on
all the while recalling the high price I paid
   to learn about chorizo

I stacked all of his belongings in
the middle of my living room and
covered them with a quilt, so I
  didn’t have reminders while
  I waited

I made calls everywhere I could think of-
  Could not find him
Then two weeks later, he called, contrite:
  Can I come home?
   My only reply was:
Come and pick up your stuff.
He arrived, tears welling up in his eyes
I had completed my research and
   hardened my heart
There was nothing left to say
I helped him load up his belongings
to get him on his way

A month later a letter arrived from
   Terminal Island Federal prison in
California- he explained that he had
specifically robbed a particular service station
committing grand theft so they would put him
in the federal system as a re-offender
where he could get federally funded rehab
and he loved me and, by the way, would
   you send me my camera?

His camera! I redeemed that pawn ticket
just before it expired and I could not afford
to redeem roughly three thousand dollars
worth of the other stuff he stole from me!

I was so incensed I tore the letter into little bits
    then burned the bits
    A few more letters came
    I never responded and
    Then no more

Out of curiosity about a year later, I
asked a friend of mine, who happened
to be a parole officer, if she would see
  what happened to him
She looked him up in an interstate
  data bank
   His file was marked:   Terminated
  she said
So I asked her what that meant
  Her reply: released or dead

Curiosity satisfied, I let it go
He had built porches and cabinetry
and he was one helluvan artist, having
   left some incredible paintings behind
   which I gave away
As far as I was concerned: debt paid

As I finish of the last bite of my chorizo feast
I smile, feeling, at last wise
Could have learned how to scramble chorizo
with green peppers, onions and eggs from
  somebody else, but then
  I wouldn’t have this story to tell…

Apalon Beauchaire

Image result for free lighthouse images

  In a Coast Guard tower
  on a leather flight jacket
a seventeen year old girl lay
  receiving a gift of love
 from a twenty-one year old
 drop dead gorgeous crew man
  who had previously stolen
 her heart with his first
 succulent kiss

  There had been many sexy
  conversations based on
   What if this happened in
  the future some day? and
  there had been an
  acknowledgement of obvious
  Love- at-first- sight attraction

But, she was a country kid
slow to trust a guy from
   the city
   because that’s what she
   had been taught

  He was bright, more worldly
  and had a wry wit
  She was constantly in stitches
  around him and
   he was wise enough, although
   young himself
   not to pressure her

   Trust grew by kindness and
   listening and
   making her laugh and
   stroking her long hair
   and telling her how much
   she reminded him of
   Veronica Lake

He was a master story teller
   enthralling her with a mythical
  character he called Apalon Beauchaire,
a French man, who was a
    World class lover and
   always got the woman
   of his desire

   The day it happened
     on a sunny afternoon
    in July
   She was visiting him
   on base in Port Angeles

He asked her if she wanted
   to see the tower
  Of course she said yes,
   adventuress that she was

    As they looked out at
     the bright mid-day, she
    kissed him and said,
    What if some day
    became today?

    He smiled big, took off
    his flight jacket and
    gently laid her down…

PCH Sweepstakes,Duping folks since the 70s

Image result for free images of dreams in clouds

Beware of Publisher’s Clearing House!
My father has been gone since 1981
In commemoration of him
I entered Publisher’s Clearing House, $5,000 per week
For Life contest because the deadline was December 30th
His birthday
What a wide awake nightmare!
I’ve purchased only a couple publications
And a bunch of random stuff that seems great
In the moment and regrettable ten minutes later

I would love to not worry about paying my bills ever again
But now I know I will probably not win because even though
They claim you do not have to make a purchase to win-I am
Exhausted from resisting-and playing their on screen “scratch offs”
And accumulating points to buy more stuff!

I cannot take it anymore
I am going to unsubscribe and
All that happened was their marketing scheme
Worked (temporarily) on me

The truth is Pop entered for years ever hopeful
He went to his grave never winning
Come to think of it, I have never met one person
Who won the Publisher’s Clearing House Sweepstakes-
So, I am asking, just out of curiosity, if you are a PCH winner
Or know someone who has won
Please let me know!
They claim that they’re going to drive up to my P.O. Box
With flowers and a great big check- my question is: How will they
Know when I’ll be there?

Maureen

Image result for free images of girl folk singer with guitar

Maureen, Maureen, what a beautiful lady
You have one babe on your arm
And another inside
You just keep strolling down life’s
Rocky roadway
You’re so independent that I
Gave you a ride…

You missed your bus, and it was
Almost raining
I heard you curse the powers that be
But I could tell that you weren’t defeated
Some how I knew that lady is free

Your child trailed behind you
Not wanting to walk
But you kept on going
Unwilling to talk
That poignant scene, warmed me inside
And all I could do was to offer a ride

Well, you said your man left you
For another, matter-of-fact, like
Please pass the tea
I realized from hearing your story
That people are free as
They wish to be

Maureen, Maureen, what a beautiful lady
You have one babe on your arm
And another inside
You just keep strolling down life’s
Rocky roadway
You’re so independent that I
Gave you a ride…

True story. Witnessing Maureen's courage inspired me to get out of an oppressive marriage.
Chance meetings really can change a life.

My E.R. Doctor

Image result for free image of young doctor in silhouette

                           He was tall and mustachioed
with wavy wild hair, grey eyes
                     that saw all of you
Despite my pain, he put me
            in a lather…

He had a competent touch as
he felt my ribs, walking his fingers
up to just below my throbbing
                        breast

He spoke softly as he gave
                              the diagnosis
I was given an instruction sheet
                    (Thank God) because I
did not hear a word he said

I do have an opinion about that:
            They should screen heart throbs
          out of medical school!

I mean, how is someone who
makes your heart skip a beat
                 gonna save you?
