GWTW, My Mother and Me

GONE-WITH-THE-WIND

When I was nine, my mother took me
to see Gone With the Wind for
the first time- that was back when
it was only shown in theatres and
my father, a farmer who had to get up
before dawn, refused to go

By the time I was sixteen and
drove there with my girlfriend, Suzie (who had
lived in Atlanta and could share
Southern culture) Scarlett O’Hara
 had changed!
She was not the provocative shrew
my mother said she was
She had become a strong, feisty
woman, who let no man dominate her

Then I read the novel and Scarlett grew
even more complex- In the film, she was
the mother of Bonnie Blue, one child
In the novel, Scarlett was the mother
of four! – Now that is a whole different
Job description and thus would create
a whole different character!

My father said he would see GWTW when
it came to television
I remember laughing at that,
but eventually, in the late 70s, it did!
However, it is epic and deserves the
Big screen…

I read the novel seven times over the years
My changing perspective made it fresh
each time- I plan to read it this spring-
a 25 year lapse should make it brand new…

My mother would have been 100 on
October 11, 2014- the almost 75th Anniversary
of GWTW – I have new insight as to why
it so impacted her: She was 25 when it
hit theatres, a nurse in Palo Alto at the time-
A country girl in the city
learning the ropes, with Scarlett’s voice
in her head- truly it was Margaret Mitchell’s
voice, who, like an older sister may have said:
This is how it is for women, in a world of men,
we get along the best we can

Soon, my mother would move
back to Washington State and marry
my father, because: he wrote in a letter
that if she did not hustle,
he would not wait!

Even as an old woman
after my father’s death
Mother still spoke fondly of
Rhett Butler who offered
Scarlett a marriage of fun!

The End of the World?

I’ve heard that there are people that worry about the
End of the World- I wonder why
I never worry about the End of the World because
I assume I won’t be here for that show!

The world was here for a good long time before
I came along and
It seems to me it will keep being here
long after I am gone

There are people fighting and dying over
their differences, never stopping to
contemplate how very much
humans have in common

We all need to breathe air, drink water
and eat food to survive
We have plenty, as a global community
and yet millions starve to death each day

Humans made up religion so they could
feel safe and loved by their gods, but
when we cannot agree on whose god is
right, we fly into fits of murderous
rage
Why? I wonder why?
Does the world end if I don’t believe in your
God?
Does the world end if you don’t believe in
My god?

To some, I am an infidel-to be destroyed
They will rig bombs to blow me to high
Heaven because I won’t acknowledge
Their god, who says: Kill everyone who
does not adore me!

Hellfire sounds scary! Hard to believe some
so-called holy men threaten to rain it down from
their pulpits

One of our gods said: forgive them for they
know not what they do
My personal god knows it does not matter much
because souls are fireproof and return
again and again to unlearned curriculum

My god is sometimes amused by
all the stupidity but says friction
Is necessary, so let the souls who need
to play those games make all the noise
they want...

My god tells me: Love them and see their
Holiness even when they are mean-spirited
That’s the only way to win the game

I complain: I am not angry or hungry I am tired of feeding their egos
It is not fun anymore

My god laughs: do not be such a
Spoil sport! You know we need
angst to make the world go round

I would rather have love and a cup
of jasmine green tea
I don’t mind if I die before the
End of the World and besides,
I won’t be missed!

You will all be missed-and every
hair on your heads…

Excuse me, I read that novel
and it is too old to be novel
anymore
It is only a best seller because
Humans love tall, intricate tales…
They especially like to be told
that they will go to a special place
with special priveleges,
if they will be good! The proverbial
Hollywood ending, as it were
Is that why some call you Father?
By the way, who is our Mother?

How to Escape OgreCast Cable Company in Five Easy Steps & Cut your bills to Less than Half- Bundling, Schmundling!

Flat screen computer monitor with keyboard and mouse

I, too, was miserable with “bundling” and costs that fluctuated
like the Stock market until I decided to leave the OgreCast monopoly
behind. “Where there’s a will, there’s a way.”
Here is what I discovered and implemented step by step.
1.     Changed internet providers.
2.     Acquired a ROKU box. (Target)
3.     Purchased an indoor antennae (Video Only)
4.     Subscribed to Netflix Streaming & Hulu Plus (online)
5.     Bought an Ooma (Best Buy)
 Initial costs:
ROKU- cheapest version: $50.
Antennae- $30.
Ooma- $130.-150. (Got mine on sale for $130 a year ago, there may
Be better deals now)
Monthly Costs:
Internet $36. Unbundled
Ooma $4.95 taxes (basic)
Netflix+ Hulu Plus under $20.

I do admit, I hired help to hook everything up because that is not my forte.
My computer guy made it work for$25. per hour and as I recall, it did not take a full two hours.
Being a rebel and finding a more frugal solution paid off in other ways, too. I have been enjoying
The luxury of viewing an entire series in my own time.  I enjoy the set up in the beginning and the developing character arc at my own pace. Makes so much more sense than it did when I discovered a show mid-season. In the past year I’ve watched the entire Gilmore Girls series and the Medium series and now I am watching Lost. I am much more satisfied with my viewing and not worried about missing a segment.
I got the antennae because I feel a need for the news. I watch the big Three (ABC, CBS, NBC) and OPB and ION and the CW, sometimes, too. This is all the information and entertainment I can fit into my life
I have never regretted the switch. Chances are you don’t watch 10% of what you pay for if you’re bundling and believing that it saves you money$$$. Ha! Do not be hypnotized by the Ogre!  RTP

Silver Bullet Dream

It's a January, baby, it's cold outside effect that makes me dream of the beaches this time of year.
I love the northwest, but in winter, sometimes I'd rather be in a sunny clime. Also there's
that freedom thing that goes with trailers, you know like a turtle carrying it's shelter with...
I found a poem, while I was sorting files that speaks to this almost perfectly.
------------------------------------------

Heard a song on the radio about a
woman who continues to lure a man
into a life of gypsy flight
In the song she wants him to live
with her in a travel trailer
on a sunny beach

Friends used to tell me that I
reminded them of that crazy
Free spirit and I couldn’t agree
with them entirely, nor could
I disagree- every time I see an
Airstream that kind of looks like
a big silver bullet, I have to

Yank myself back to reality
After all it wouldn’t be practical
to just take off in search of
some balmy beach to camp on
and wile away my days

Instead I may need to build
a castle or tree house or
throw a birthday bash
fit for a king with elephants
and zebras among other things

Being in my prime I still have
more than fish to fry
I’ll go in search of that fantasy
Later…bye and bye
